On Thursday!

“The Business of Design: Balancing Creativity and Profitability.”

A Lecture by Keith Granet 79’

Thursday May 3rd at 10:30am Anderson Theatre

ONEONTA, NY—Keith Granet, a member of the Hartwick College Class of 1979 and founder of Granet & Associates, will return to campus for a lecture at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 3 in the Anderson Center for the Arts Theatre. He will address “The Business of Design: Balancing Creativity and Profitability.” His talk is free and open to the public.

Granet formed Granet & Associates in 1991 to provide financial and operational support management services to the design industry. He has 30 years of experience working in the design industry, beginning with the highly respected firm Gensler. After working with almost 400 design firms, Granet & Associates is now known as the premier management and licensing agency to the design industry.

His book, “The Business of Design: Balancing Creativity and Profitability” debunks the myth that entrepreneurial sense and creative talent are mutually exclusive. A vibrant and enticing look at the business side of design practice, this graphically beautiful book is neither dry nor intimidating. Over the past 30 years, consultant Granet has enjoyed helping design professionals turn their passion into profit, and is pleased to provide all of the necessary tools— from billing and human resources to branding and project management to marketing and licensing— in one easy-to-use guide.

Talking about Time
- The Loop = Infinity
- Beginning - Middle - End = 'viewer' experienced linearly through time
- Photography captures a moment in time, ie. 1/500th of a second but like video is still a span of time (considering you can take an image at 1/4000 of a second)
* this may be why Flickr will allow video on their website up to 90 seconds long. They call it a long exposure.

Stopmotion
- the movement of objects in front of the camera
- the movement of people in front of the camera
- the movement of the camera through space
- the combination of any of these possibilities

Aspects of Virtuality?
* what are the qualities of virtual space?
* where do we see virtual space overlap society?

Virtual Continuum

The Virtuality Continuum is a phrase used to describe a concept that there is a continuous scale ranging between the completely virtual, a Virtual Reality, and the completely real:Reality. The reality-virtuality continuum therefore encompasses all possible variations and compositions of real and virtual objects. The concept was first introduced by Paul Milgram.

Reality<-------------->Virtual Reality

The area between the two extremes, where both the real and the virtual are mixed, is the so-called Mixed reality. This in turn is said to consist of both Augmented Reality, where the virtual augments the real, and Augmented virtuality, where the real augments the virtual.

Mann's Continuum includes the level of degrees of mediation.

In Class Thur April 5th

Welcome to ART 116 Digital is Fundamental: 4D & 5D design.

So what the heck is this class about?
It is an overview on creating art considering the 4th & 5th dimensions.

Is this a 'computer class'?
No. Although we will definitely be using your laptops for class, this course focuses on how ALL art mediums interact with these two dimensions.
* this area of art crosses over many areas so therefore has many names. some of the more popular names are: Digital Art, Inter-Media, Hybred Media & Digital Media Arts

Can you name an art medium that has not intersected with the computer?

Is there a lab fee like in all my other classes?
Yes. It is $50 and it gets charged to your account.

How does this class work?
This class is run through 2 websites, this blog and a Facebook group. You are expected to visit both frequently. I generally update the blog within 12 hours of class, Facebook gets updated as is needed.

The blog contains all the information related to the class including links to examples, a blog on what will be covered each class, the syllabus, project details and links to useful websites.

The Facebook group will be used for important updates and deadlines and will have examples and other connections useful to the class.

Lets take a look at these two sites.

Why do I use these websites for class?

Have you heard of the term 'Web 2.0'?

What are some other examples of Web 2.0 sites?

Something to think about!
