Day 5 Wed Apr 13th

 When the Virtual meets the Physical: Bio Bots

 “These are novel living machines,” Joshua Bongard, a computer scientist and robotics expert at the University of Vermont who co-led the new research, said in a statement. “They’re neither a traditional robot nor a known species of animal. It’s a new class of artifact: a living, programmable organism.”

Aspects of Virtuality

* what are the qualities of virtual space? what does it mean to be virtual?

* where do we see virtual space overlap society?

VR to help extend our understanding

Virtual Continuum

The Virtuality Continuum is a phrase used to describe a concept that there is a continuous scale ranging between the completely virtual, a Virtual Reality, and the completely real:Reality. The reality-virtuality continuum therefore encompasses all possible variations and compositions of real and virtual objects. The concept was first introduced by Paul Milgram.

Reality<--------------->Virtual Reality

The area between the two extremes, where both the real and the virtual are mixed, is the so-called Mixed reality. This in turn is said to consist of both Augmented Reality, where the virtual augments the real, and Augmented Virtuality, where the real augments the virtual.

Reality    Augmented Virtuality    Augmented Reality   Virtual Reality

Human   Cyborg       Android         Robot

Mann's Continuum includes the level of degrees of mediation.

M = level of mediation

R = reality

V = virtual reality

Traditional example of mediated reality. Viewing the world through the machine(camera)

Assignment 2

[Assigned - Mon Apr 11th]

[Due - Fri Apr 13th]

Laser Cut Vector Design

description:
For this project you will be creating a BxW drawing that will be converted into a vector graphic and etched into wood or plastic

1. Using a sharpie or other marker create a pattern, drawing or abstraction, in a 5" x 5" square on a piece of white paper.

2. Repeat the process six times

3. Take a photo of each drawing.

4. Upload the file to the class "Art116 Vector Images" Google Photos Album

5. Participate in the group critique

6. Convert the image chosen in the critique into a vector graphic using this link

Things to consider:
The image needs to be two colors only, black and white. The laser will etch the black lines into the material. The white is the material itself. Lasers burn the material. In the case of wood it leaves it looking dark and burnt. Plastic looks frosted.

What’s Due:
Six image files up in the class 'Art116 Vector Album SP22-2' in Google Photos
